Puffing

welcome to the street photography course!

Street photography is more than just taking pictures of people in public spaces; it’s about capturing the raw, unfiltered essence of life as it unfolds in the urban landscape. In this course, we explore how to observe, connect with, and document the stories around us, using the street as our canvas.

Rush Hour

You’ll learn to see the world through the lens of a photographer, uncovering moments of joy, solitude, chaos, and everything in between. Whether you’re looking to tell compelling stories, sharpen your technical skills, or discover your unique perspective, this course will guide you through the techniques and mindset needed to create impactful street photography.

Laundry

let’s get started

A typical day will see us meet at 10 am in a local cafe. Introductions and then straight down to it. I will quite quickly help you (if needed) set up your camera for the day ahead.

Lovin It

tools of the trade

First and foremost you do not need loads of gear! Please do not bring lots, remember you have to carry it! I recommend a smallish camera and lens with a focal length of 35 mm or equivalent if using a crop sensor camera. You wont need a flash or tripod but a notebook will be handy and of course spare batteries and a couple of cards … oh, and comfy shoes.

So … there you are, all set up and no big outlay.

Dog Car

morning session

We will hit the streets and warm up a little just looking for interesting scenes, practising the use of leading lines, understanding juxtaposition, thinking about composition and exposure and of course zone focusing and exposure.

That will take us nicely through to lunch of around 45 minutes where questions about any aspect of photography can be discussed and, of course, we can take a look at some shots from the session.

Ballet

afternoon session

Now you have gained some more confidence in the way you are handling your camera, we will look for some people! But we can’t go round as a pack hunting people down! What I like to do is have a chat about how to approach situations. I will give you loads of ideas and help, so don’t worry if I don’t cover something. Please just ask … I am yours for the day!

I then pair you up and send you off in different directions to see what you can find, using ideas we have chatted about or something that you just stumble across (often the best).

Bookie

winding up

As you are walking around I will find you and offer any help and advice, or you can call me during the day if you need an answer quickly! We aim to finish the day around 4.30 pm and, trust me, you will be tired. For the last hour I hope to hear about your experiences as you wander around and see some of your images, and again answer any questions.

Bag and Dog

take the plunge

I promise you will gain so much from the day, it may seem like info overload, but remember I am there to help and work at your pace.

If there is anything about the day you would like to ask … please contact me. The same goes for after the sessions, where I will be happy to follow up with you on any issues.
